Crusader Kings III has a large and growing DLC catalogue, and not all of it is equally essential. The good news is that CK3's DLC is modular — each expansion ships alongside a free patch that hands the base game most of the underlying systems, so you buy expansions for the content and depth, not to keep the game functional. In multiplayer, if the host owns a gameplay DLC, everyone in the session benefits from it. This guide ranks the major expansions and tells you which to buy for what.

## If you buy one thing For most players the first purchase is **Royal Court** (foundational systems, culture hybridization) or **Tours and Tournaments** (travel and activities that transform the whole map). If you have a specific dream — play unlanded, or rule Byzantium — buy **Roads to Power**. For a brand-new region, buy **All Under Heaven**.
## Major expansions, ranked by impact
ExpansionReleasedWhat it addsWorth it for…
All Under Heaven2025-10-28Extends the map to East Asia — China, Japan, Southeast Asia — with the Mandate of Heaven and God-King play. For players who want a whole new region. The current flagship expansion.
Roads to Power2024-09-24Administrative government, the landless Adventurer lifestyle, the Influence system, and Byzantine flavor.Buy this to play unlanded, or to play Byzantium properly.
Legends of the Dead2024Legends, epidemics including the Black Death, and related event content.Atmospheric depth; strong for emergent storytelling.
Tours and Tournaments2023Grand activities, tournaments, weddings, and travel across the map.One of the most-loved packs — travel makes the map feel alive.
Royal Court2022The throne room, cultural hybridization, artifacts, and court positions.Foundational. Culture hybridization alone reshapes long-term play.

The pattern to notice: the older foundational expansions (Royal Court, Tours and Tournaments) change how every campaign plays, while the newer ones (Roads to Power, All Under Heaven) add specific new ways to play or new regions. Building a library from scratch, the foundational packs give the broadest return; the regional and lifestyle packs are targeted purchases for a playstyle you already want.

## Flavor packs

Flavor packs are smaller, cheaper, and add regional depth rather than realm-wide systems. Buy these when you specifically want their region or theme.

## Should you buy a chapter pass?

Paradox sells its DLC in chapter bundles as well as individually. A chapter pass bundles an expansion with the flavor and cosmetic packs released around it, and works out cheaper than buying those pieces separately — worthwhile if you already want the headline expansion and are happy to take the smaller packs along with it. If you only want one specific expansion, buy it on its own, ideally during a sale. DLC goes on sale regularly, and there is rarely a reason to pay full price for older packs.
